From the Begining
Peter Surgeson and his son Norman started Surgeson Electric Ltd. in 1946. They operated in a small downtown Cornwall garage behind the Jade Garden Restaurant. At that time the staff consisted of two employees who mainly repaired household appliances and small electric motors. Within ten years, the shop moved to 18 Third Street East. During this time the business expanded to include larger electric motors from the St. Lawrence Seaway Project.
As Cornwall’s industrial base expanded so did Surgeson Electric. During the growth period of 1960’s the shop relocated to its current Pitt and Emma Street location. For the next forty years, Surgeson Electric developed into a premier motor shop, serving all of Eastern Ontario. Our market extends from Cornwall west to Brockville, Ottawa and Winchester, north to the Ottawa River and east to the Quebec Border.
Repairs ranged from sub fractional to one thousand horsepower, and included overhauls, rewinds, redesigns, winding confirmation and core loss testing. With this expansion, Surgeson Electric created its own in house machine shop, and diversified into dynamic balancing, control panel building and off site vibration analysis. During these years, Surgeson Electric also brought in a complete wholesale line of associated electric motor controls, thus becoming a complete sales and service centre.
Surgeson Electric is pleased to be the first Omron Dealer in all of Ontario. Furthermore, we are extremely proud of our association with Baldor Electric. We have been a Master Distributor for Baldor for over 40 years and have received many prestigious awards for being the top distributor in Ontario. Also, Surgeson has maintained its membership with the Electrical Apparatus Service Association (EASA), Ontario chapter. EASA is an international organization, which promotes quality repair of electric motors. In the ever-changing world of technology, we pride ourselves on regularly sending our technical and sales staff to special training offered by our numerous suppliers, such as Baldor Motors, Omron Controls, ABB Controls, and Lincoln Welders. In 1981, Bruce Surgeson and Kenneth Thompson took over the company and in 2008 the Marleau Group of Companies, a successful local Plumbing and HVAC Company purchased the assets and trade name Surgeson Electric.
Today, Surgeson Electric is a division of Cornwall Motors & Controls Inc. and continues to operate out of its 5,000 sq. ft. shop facility with a staff of 11 employees. Ken has agreed to stay on part time with us and continue to help us with his vast technical expertise.
In keeping with Marleau’s mission statement, Surgeson Electric plans to continue as a reputable company, which delivers quality products, at a fair price and within a reasonable period of time. Thank you for taking the time to visit our Website. Luc & Paul Marleau |
